Narrative Description of Activities for Education and Community Services
Overview:
The aim of Zuania Corp (Education for life) is to promote the development of young people at risk of falling into drugs, veterans and the forgotten and underserved members in our society in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential, as individuals, and as responsible citizens, as members of the community through education.
Why there is a need for this organization
When Florencia H San German’s son separated from his partner with two children in 2017, he joined the local addict and homeless groups. His mother, Florencia, was unable to find an adequate mental health group to help her and her son, and the other family members suffered from anxiety and stress.
The family reached out and begged/pleaded to any and everyone (D.A., Judges, Police, Sheriff, Counselors/Psychologists, Churches, etc.) to please help save the child from himself, it truly was all for naught due to the mental health laws, not ONE person could help.
Finally, in 2021, after seeking support from immigrant and refugee groups that base their education on indigenous and/or Latino cultural practices, she was able to get her son off drugs. Along the way to support her son, she realized the distressing reality that family members of substance addicts experience, especially in low-income communities.
She realized how serious and high the statistics of drug addiction were, but she also found that the help offered to low-income families was mostly inadequate and insufficient. She also became aware of the distressing life that the families of addicts lead, who become increasingly united in a circle with no way out because they do not receive adequate help or education and live in a continuous and stormy life of guilt and violence.
Current State of Drug Addiction and Depression in the United States
A recent poll by KFF published in July 2023 shows that a staggering two-thirds of the population polled have been addicted to alcohol or drugs. A shocking 106,000 overdose deaths have been reported in 2022. Nearly 30% of those polled say that they or someone in their family has been addicted to prescribed or illegal opioids such as heroin and fentanyl.
As millions of Americans are struggling with addiction and substance use, abuse and related disorders, battling other challenges such as mental health issues, homelessness, and overdose deaths, it is ever more important to create an awareness about addiction.
According to National on Mental Illness (NAMI)
- 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year
- 1 in 25 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year
- 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year
- 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24
- Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34
